Keys
to Selecting Potential Derby Winner
|

I realize
it's pretty early to be thinking about the Derby, especially
for a jockey. However, I know that there are lots of folks out
there who like to take advantage of the future-book odds they
can get at this early stage. So, here are some things to look
for in a potential Kentucky Derby contender.
1. Breeding
A horse with strong bloodlines that lean toward the stamina
side usually wins the classic races. Of course, there are always
exceptions to the rule. I'm not a big proponent of the "dosage"
theory but I'd choose a well-bred horse over one that's not
so fashionably bred any day.
2. Tactical
Speed--A horse with good tactical speed is the type I prefer
to ride because they have a better chance of avoiding traffic
trouble in the Run for the Roses. Also, a runner with tactical
speed can stay in touch with the early speed and get the jump
on the closers.
3. Location,
Location, Location--Seldom does a Kentucky Derby winner come
from one of the smaller tracks where the competition is not
as classy. Most of the true contenders will be training in California,
New York or Florida.

4. Rider
Selection--If a popular jockey has been riding two or more horses
that have shown potential in the prep races, give a lot of credit
to the final selection. While there are races where I'll ride
one horse over another because it's in the barn of one of my
main clients, the Kentucky Derby is not one of them. It's the
most desired prize in our sport. Therefore, most jockeys ride
the horse they think has the best chance to win the Derby.
5. Trainer--Along
those lines give extra credit to trainers who have reputations
for succeeding in big races. They know how to get the job done.
Till next
week, safe trips...
